Start Up Instructions for your Swimming Pool's Perma Salt System

Owning a swimming pool involves many responsibilities, including maintenance of the swimming pool water through a filter system. Many pool owners rely on an elemental swimming pool filter; unlike other swimming pool supplies which depend on chlorine, these filter systems utilize natural minerals such as silver and copper.

Elemental systems will not burn the skin and eyes or cause significant swimsuit fade, unlike chlorinated systems. The Perma Salt System from Family Leisure is an example of an elemental system. Are you searching for startup instructions for your swimming pool's Perma Salt Filter System? Well here are your instructions:

  1. Fill up the swimming pool with water to the proper level, typically right at the second screw on the faceplate.
  2. Turn on the system by simply priming the pump and turning the filter on.
  3. If you have well water, be sure to treat the pool water with Iron Remover or Metal Free (view Metal Free here). Be sure to follow the instructions on the bottles of these products before using them.
  4. Test Your Swimming Pool Water: The alkalinity should be between 80ppm and 120ppm. If the alkalinity is high, add Muriatic Acid (only available in stores) one gallon at a time, very carefully, with the water circulating. Wait 12 hours to swim or retest. Keep adding Muriatic Acid until the alkalinity reaches the mentioned range above. The pH balance should be between 7.2 and 7.8. If the pH is too high, add pH Reducer (pictured right; view pH Reducer here). If the pH is too low, add pH Increaser (view pH Increaser here). Calcium hardness should be between 200ppm and 350ppm.
  5. Turn on the Perma Salt System: First, plug it in and turn it on. Set the control knob to the highest setting where the green light is on and the red light is not. Be sure this green indicator light is on and illuminated when the water starts flowing.
  6. Add a 25 pound bucket of Preparate (pictured right) (view Preparate here) along with two 40 pound bags of Ionizer Salt (only available in stores). Let them circulate and dissolve for 48 hours; do not allow swimmers in the water during this time period. Test the water for Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). The level should be a minimum of 1,000ppm in order to achieve an accurate level of the natural mineral residual. If the TDS level is not at 1,000ppm or more, add more Ionizer Salt until you reach the appropriate level.
  7. Start your bi-weekly maintenance routine: Some pools require weekly maintenance because of their size. Test the water for pH, Alkalinity and Copper. The amount of Copper indicates the amount of natural minerals in the water. The Copper should be maintained between .3 and .5ppm; adjust the knob to reflect this. Add one bottle of Klairate (view Perma Salt Klairate here) bi-weekly for all sizes of pools.
  8. Phos Free: Test your water at the beginning of the swimming pool season for phosphates (view a Phosphate Test Kit here); if you find high levels, add Phosphate Reducer (only available in stores). Add Pool Magic (view Pool Magic here) and Phos Free (view Phos Free here) at the beginning and end of every swimming season, while every week adding one cap for every 8,000 gallons of Pool Perfect (view Pool Perfect here) and Phos Free.
