The term “regulation standard” refers to the geometry of the pool table’s playfield — the actual playable area — and not any actual size.
Basically, the playfield ratio should be an even 2/1 (length/width).
So a regulation standard 7-foot pool table would have a playfield of 78 in. x39 in.
In general, pool tables weigh between 650 and 900 pounds, dependant on the size, features, and design. There are many factors that can affect the weight of a pool table, including type of cloth, cushions, pockets and table frame.
While slate is extremely heavy and dense, it’s also has phenomenally long-lasting durability. Slate can be honed to within a thousandth of an inch of level, making it a perfect surface for a pool table.
Italian slate is generally regarded as the most premium pool table material. That said, Brazilian slate has been rising in popularity in recent years.
The optimal room size would take into consideration the size of the pool table + double the length of the cue stick you’re using to play. Think of it in terms of this equation:
POOL + (CUE x 2)
This equation will give you an ideal room size. If the room is slightly smaller, then you might not have a full range of cue motion, or you might have to use “shorty” cue sticks, which can come as small as 36 inches.
