Start Up Instructions for 3" Jumbo Chlorine Tablets in Your Swimming Pool

Starting up your swimming pool can be a long and arduous process, involving many swimming pools supplies. Curious about startup instructions for 3" Chlorine Jumbo Tablets (pictured right; view 3" Jumbo Chlorine Tabs here)? Well here are your instructions:

  1. Fill up the swimming pool with water to the proper level, typically right at the second screw on the faceplate.
  2. If you have a sand filter system (skip down to the end of this paragraph if you own an element filter system), prime the pump by opening the gate valve and allow the skimmer on pump to fill with water. You may have to burp the air out of the skimmer on pump by loosening the lid. The filter should be started on backwash. Set pump to backwash and turn on the pump. Backwash the filter for 30 seconds and then turn off the pump. Set to rinse, rinse for 30 seconds, and then turn off the pump again. Set the pump to filter and turn on the pump. If you own an element filter, just simply prime the pump and turn the filter on.
  3. If you have well water, be sure to treat the pool water with Iron Remover (view Iron Remover here) or Metal Free (view Metal Free here). Be sure to follow the instructions on the bottles of these products before using them.
  4. Test Your Swimming Pool Water: The alkalinity should be between 80ppm and 120ppm. If the alkalinity is high, add Muriatic Acid (only available in stores) one gallon at a time, very carefully, with the water circulating. Wait 12 hours to swim or retest. Keep adding Muriatic Acid until the alkalinity reaches the mentioned range above. The pH balance should be between 7.2 and 7.8. If the pH is too high, add pH Reducer (pictured right; view pH Reducer here). If the pH is too low, add pH Increaser (view pH Increaser here). It's time to add Granular Chlorine (view Granular Chlorine here) to reach between 1 and 3ppm free chlorine reading. Use the instructions included with the Granular Chlorine.
  5. Condition Your Swimming Pool Water: Add Conditioner / Stabilizer (view Pool Conditioner here) to prevent chlorine loss due to sunlight. Place the conditioner in a sock or panty hose and tie it to the ladder. Placing conditioner inside of something that can sit in the pool is the best way to dissolve most conditioners, since they do not dissolve quickly. The ideal range is between 30ppm and 50ppm, with a safe range for swimmers up to 100ppm.
  6. Place 3" Jumbo Tabs (view Chlorine Tablets here) in a chlorine floater (the PoolFrog Dispenser is picture right as an example; view the PoolFrog by PoolMaster here) to maintain a free chlorine rating of 1 to 3ppm of free chlorine. The number of tablets used depends on the size of a pool, the heat and usage, so be sure read the instructions.
  7. For weekly maintenance, add one pound of Pool Blast (view Pool Blast here) once a week; one pound of Blast per 10,000 gallons of pool water should be enough. Test the pool water weekly for pH, Alkalinity and Free Chlorine.
  8. Phos Free: Test your water at the beginning of the swimming pool season for phosphates (view a Phosphate Test Kit here); if you find high levels, add Phosphate Reducer (only available in stores). Add Pool Magic (view Pool Magic here) and Phos Free (view Phos Free here) at the beginning and end of every swimming season, while every week adding one capful for every 8,000 gallons of Pool Perfect (view Pool Perfect here) and Phos Free a week.
