Hillsdale Furniture offers multiple styles and multiple functions

For more than two decades Hillsdale Furniture has produced home furnishings such as entertainment centers, desks, chairs, tables, beds and much more. They are based in Louisville, Kentucky, where they ship their furniture from a 300,000 square foot distribution center. Hillsdale indicates their furniture designers actually own the company, which increases the quality of their products.

Hillsdale offers different types of stools as well as furniture for the dining room, bed room, game room, office and living room. Since the designers own the company, Hillsdale focuses on superior designs for their furniture. Take the Kingston Bar Stool pictured right as an example; view the Kingston Bar Stool here. The black leather back rest is outlined with brass tacks or nail heads, while the molded edges and curved arm supports copy classic Rococo Revival side chairs. This focus on traditional elements in their designs sets Hillsdale apart from other bar stool and game table manufacturers.

But Hillsdale does look to the future with both their designs and the function of their furniture. While the upper half of the above Kingston Bar Stool mimics antique furniture, the lower half is quite modern, with clean legs that gently curve and a round, circular stretcher. In addition to these sporadic elements of contemporary design, this bar stool offers modern function, with a swivel mechanism that allows the sitter to turn 360 degrees.

In fact, it's the blending of modern function with traditional style that is Hillsdale's greatest attraction. Take their line of game tables and poker tables as an example. Each table offers multiple functions, allowing the owner to convert their dining table into a poker table complete with black felt surface and cup holders or a game table, complete with a checkerboard surface great for chess or checkers. Some of these tables only offer two surfaces, but many offer three or four.

Note the Palm Springs Game Table Collection, which is pictured left as an example (view the Palms Game Table Set here). The chairs showcase swivel action, tilt and height controls, rollers and other modern functions paired with a broad design style that seems to copy Federal or Empire antique furniture. Notice the edged scrolls in the arms and top rails, along with the wide and short profile of the upper half of the chair, all elements found in these two styles.

The table in this Hillsdale collection is transitional, mixing traditional moldings with contemporary half-sphere legs and a circular stretcher. But clearly the best aspect of the table is the three surfaces packed into this model. The table offers a panel with a dining surface of beautiful veneered wood on one side and a poker surface complete with black felt, cup holders and chip trays on the other. Entertain guests over food and wine with one surface, and then flip it to play a game of poker with your buddies. Or you can completely remove the panel to expose the gaming surface (pictured right), which offers multiple game boards including a checkerboard and a backgammon board. While this surface does not come with all Hillsdale Game Tables, it is offered on a few such as the Palms Springs.
