Tired of animated movies with singing animals and dancing penguins?

Are 3-D movies becoming too expensive and as mind numbing for you as they are for me? Tired of animated movies with singing animals and dancing penguins? Searching for a great place in San Antonio to take the kids that won’t drive you nuts? Then the Witte Museum is for you!

This San Antonio museum is the leading authority on everything South Texas. Most of the permanent exhibits are interactive and adults and children really enjoy the hands on experience. The museum was founded in 1926. Its location is majestic, sitting atop the banks of the San Antonio River in Brackenridge Park.

The exhibits are designed for interactive learning for kids and they love it. Some favorites of both children and adults include:

  • Texas Wild: This exhibit explains how animals found in Texas have adapted their appearance and behavior in relation to where they live. The exhibit delves into animal camouflage for protection as well as how animals of prey have adapted in order to find food. Part of the exhibit is called Animals Alive. It lives up to its name, as it is replete with live animals that include spiders, snakes and bees.
  • Unwrapping the Past: This exhibit lets kids discover the ancient people of Egypt who thousands of years ago preserved their dead by mummifying them. It answers the question of how tell if a mummy is a man or a woman and further explains the relationship between ancient Egypt and South Texas.
  • Dinosaur Hall: Always a hit with kids, the dinosaur exhibit includes a Triceratops and a Tyrannosaurus Rex. What dinosaurs ate, meat or foliage, is revealed and everyone can compare their footprint size with that of a dinosaur footprint. The dinosaur exhibit will awe even you.
  • H-E-B Science Treehouse: The treehouse is located just outside the museum proper and overlooks the San Antonio river. It’s a four-story building filled with interactive exhibits areas in scientific exploration in areas such as Simple Machines, Eco- Science, Underground Energy and Small World Science. Walkways and bridges connect it to another smaller two-story tree house. Outside, the San Antonio River powers an Archimedes screw, water wheels and diversion gates.

In addition, there are other permanent exhibits and the museum frequently rotates temporary exhibits from its own collection as well exhibits on tour from other museums. You and your kids will love this place as much as we do!
