Yes, I’m considering yoga... Should I be scared?

My friends have been after me for years to try yoga. I’ve resisted, since I don’t know much about it except what I’ve seen on television, and what I’ve seen looks pretty impossible for me. I’ve had back pain since I was a teenager, so trying some of the positions just seems overwhelming. After the birth of my third child a couple of years ago, each time I pick up the baby carrier or swing the diaper bag over my shoulder, I know I need to do something to make my lower back stronger. So that’s why I’m considering yoga.

The yoga center my friends use is called Sanctuary. It’s located in the Green Hills area on Richard Jones Road, so it’s convenient to where I live and to my kids’ schools. So next week, after I drop everyone off, I’m meeting up with two friends and going to give a beginner class a try.

Since I’ve never taken yoga, I wanted to make sure I had the right equipment and clothing. So I headed over to The Hills shopping center in Green Hills on Hillsboro Pike to the Lululemon Store to get what I needed for the class. I knew I needed a yoga mat, and the sales person recommended a mat that was extra long and wide with extra padding to protect my joints and spine while practicing. She also recommended an absorbent yoga towel to use on the mat when things get sweaty. She suggested a dense foam yoga block to go with my mat and towel, so I’d be ready with the basic supplies before I got started. I also picked up a new water bottle to complete my equipment package.

As far as clothing, I wanted some cropped yoga pants to keep me comfortable, a sports bra for good support and a yogi tee. I love the soft feel of each of these pieces, and having the appropriate gear will help me feel more confident as I get started. I don’t want to be the only one in class without the right clothing for the job, no matter how old I get! I finished my outfit with a pair of yoga socks to keep my feet cool.

I’ll admit, I’m a little nervous about the first class. I guess it’s just because I’ve never tried yoga before and I want to enjoy it as well as improve my strength and flexibility. But if I go in with a positive attitude ready to learn and to try something new, I’m sure it will be a great experience.
