Preparing the pool water for winter is the first step

Winter Pool Combo Kit with Winter PillThe first stage in closing your above ground swimming pool for the winter is preparing the pool water itself. This process involves the following steps:

  1. Hook-up the vacuum and sweep the pool.
  2. Adjust the alkalinity levels to between 80 and 120 ppm (view Alkalinity Increaser here).
  3. Balance the pH levels between 7.2 and 7.8 ppm (view pH Increaser here).
  4. Add pool chlorine if needed (view Pool Chlorine here).
  5. Shock the pool water (view Quick Shock here).
  6. Add contents of your Winter Kit to the pool water (the Winter Pool Combo Kit is pictured right as an example; view the Winter Combo Kit 30,000 Gallons here).
  7. Circulate the pool water for a minimum of two hours.
  8. Lower the pool water to a level below the skimmer and return jets (do not completely drain).
  9. Remove the pump and filter system from the pool and store away inside.
  10. Puncture the Winter Pill and place directly in the pool water (view the Winter Pill here).

With your swimming pool water properly prepared for winter your swimming pool is now ready to complete the winterization process, which typically involves preparing the pool filter system and adding a winter cover. We will discuss these subjects in a future blog, so be sure to check back for more information. To continue reading about preparing your pool for winter, read the Winter Pool Care 2 blog here.
