Vegetable gardens can be just as esthetically pleasing as a flower bed

They are good for you, just like Mom and Uncle Sam said. They're even better if you grow them yourself. Vegetable gardens tend to be utilitarian rather than decorative; however, vegetable gardens can be just as esthetically pleasing as a flower bed.

Vegetable gardens don’t have to be rectangular. Envision a garden with organic curves and pleasing angles. Give your garden an entrance, with an arbor or gate. Design your garden around a meandering gravel or paver path; place a water feature or decorative rain barrel in the center. Edge your vegetables just as you edge your flowers, with stones or pavers or ornamental fencing.

Finally, consider the plants themselves. Incorporate some flowers, not only for color, but for damage control. Daisies, and all their cousins, attract beneficial insects to the garden. Marigolds are known for repelling the less desirable ones. And don’t forget edible flowers like nasturtiums, violets, evening primrose, sugar snap peas and St. John’s Wort. Plant decorative herbs such as tricolor sage, purple basil, lavender, and oregano.

There are a variety of lettuces that can add a striking touch; lettuce leaves come in an array of shades, including bronze, burgundy and red. Bright Lights Swiss chard can add a rainbow of color; plant peppers for dashes of green, red, and yellow. Rhubarb is a decorative choice, with its brilliant red stalks and creamy flowers. Eggplant is a beautiful addition, as well as lemon squash and purple cabbage. Finally, add some vining plants, such as scarlet runner beans and sweet peas. These can be planted around teepee trellises or topiaries to create vertical elements.
