We've picked out six bakeries to check out. What are your favorites?

Some time after the treats from Christmas have settled and before Valentine’s Day, my friends and I plan to embark on the annual Oklahoma City Bakery Tour. We’ve picked out six bakeries to check out. We’re looking forward to spending the day shuffling around the city, indulging in baked goods and coming within range of slipping into a sugar-induced coma—an American pastime if ever there was one.

Here's the itinerary for our first tour:

  1. La Baguette Bistro: Who doesn't want to start their day at a place called La Baguette Bistro? This spot is our first stop because its Sunday brunch and breakfast pastries are apparently to die for. Owned by Alain and Michel Buthion, this place sounds too French and too delicious to even think of passing up.
  1. Ingrid's Kitchen: A bakery and café combo, we plan on stopping at Ingrid's Kitchen to try their famed Thumbprint cookies. Made from soft shortbread and homemade chocolate frosting, these cookies sound like a "try now or regret it for the rest of your life" opportunity.
  1. Gigi's Cupcakes: A fairly new chain cupcake shop out of Tennessee, Gigi's is known for different flavors every day and mile high frosting on each of their creations. I've been once before and had a cupcake that I thought only existed in my dreams. While I can't remember the exact name, it was something to the effect of “Dark Midnight Mocha Madness.” My brain could hardly process its goodness. Get to Gigi's early, as the popular cakes tend to sell out by lunchtime!
  1. Coco Flow Chocolate Café: With the best name for a bakery I've probably ever heard, I've also heard that the Coco Flow Chocolate Café has some of the best sweets in OKC. It's a locally owned, smaller business, and we're really looking forward to supporting them!
  1. Cuppies and Joe: At this point in the tour, I’m fairly certain we might need a pick me up. With the high sugar intake we're bound to come down sooner or later, so we've strategically placed a coffee shop near the end to help us keep our heads in the game. The catch: this coffee shop also serves cupcakes. What else could anyone ask for?
  1. Checkerboard Café and Bakery: Our last stop will be a bakery and café combo, just in case our tummies are craving something other than sugar. The Checkerboard Café and Bakery is a great spot for lunch and a decadent dessert to follow!

Tips and Tricks

To plan and successfully execute your own bakery tour, keep these few tips in mind!

  • Start early and take your time. Allow time for digestion before moving on.
  • Split each dessert and order just enough for everyone to have a few bites, which is usually one dessert per location. This tactic will keep both the cost and calorie count lower! You can also save leftovers for later in the week!
  • Don't over-indulge TOO much. You really don't want to slip into a coma.
