When it's cold out, most of us prefer indoor activities. This makes winter the perfect time to check out exhibits in Little Rock's museums. Here's what's on view right now that we plan to visit:
Museum of Discovery
The Museum of Discovery, located in the River Market area of downtown, is an awesome place to take the kids...or to indulge the kid within. The current feature exhibit, on display until April 7, is titled "Dinosaur Discoveries: Ancient Fossils, New Ideas." It includes 1,500 square feet worth of interactive displays and dinosaur bones! Need I say more?
Arkansas Arts Center
I could easily while away an afternoon gazing at the amazing permanent collections at the Arkansas Arts Center, located at the corner of MacArthur Park. The permanent collection contains works by masters such as Jackson Pollack, Cezanne and Diego Rivera. There are constantly new and interesting exhibitions visiting the museum, such as a display of watercolors and drawings by Paul Signac; a collection called "Horizons Interrupted" that features a variety of pieces that celebrate the horizontal line; and you can also check out the museum's new acquisition, "Red Dinosaur," a breathtaking red glass sculpture by Lino Tagliapietra.
Arkansas Studies Institute Gallery
The newly opened Butler Center for Arkansas Studies highlights the history and culture of our beloved state. Located near the main CALS library branch downtown, these new galleries feature a beautiful blend of historic and modern architecture. The current exhibits include "Arkansas Women to Watch" and "ARK. In the Dark: An Exhibition of Vintage Movie Posters about Arkansas." As movie buffs, we're especially excited to check that one out!
Mosaic Templars Cultural Center
Several years ago, I was devastated when the historic Mosaic Templars building at 9th and Broadway burned down. Fortunately, enough funds were collected to restore and rebuild it close to its original state, and today you can visit it and check out interesting exhibitions on African-American culture in Arkansas.
William J. Clinton Presidential Center
Any list of museums in Little Rock would be remiss without including former President Bill Clinton's presidential library. This glassy structure allows you to feel the warmth of the sunlight without actually going outside (a major bonus this time of the year!), and you can spend hours perusing relics from a specific period in our country's history. There are so many temporary exhibits that come and go that we can't list them all, but we'll definitely be checking them out and encourage you to do the same!
Have you checked out any great exhibits lately that you would recommend?
