The approach of winter means most pool owners are preparing their swimming pools for the coming ice and freezing temperatures. The process of closing a pool for winter requires many steps and pieces of equipment, from removing the filter systems to prevent ice cracks to adding a winter cover to keep out debris and rain water. Our Winter Pool Care blogs have discussed some of the steps to prepare your pool for winter (read Winter Pool Care here or Winter Pool Care 2 here).
In the past the list of things needed to winterize an above ground swimming pool could be quite long and extensive. But recently Family Leisure has focused on making the winter easier for pool owners, introducing items such as the EZ Drain Winter Cover, which automatically pulls rain water from the top of the winter cover and drains it to a lawn or other area. View the EZ Drain Winter Cover here or learn more and read the EZ Drain Winter Cover blog here.
Like the EZ Drain Winter Cover, Family Leisure Winter Pool Combination Kits are designed to offer a great value (the Winter Kit 30,000 Gallons is pictured above as an example; view the Winter Kit 30,000 Gallons here), while making owning a pool during the winter easy. There are several sizes of winter kits and each is categorized by the volume of pool water you will need to treat: Winter Kit 12,000 Gallons (view the Winter Kit 12,000 Gallons here); Winter Kit 15,000 Gallons (view the Winter Kit 15,000 Gallons here); Winter Kit 24,000 Gallons (view the Winter Kit 24,000 Gallons here) and Winter Kit 30,000 Gallons (view the Winter Kit 30,000 Gallons here).
All of the combo kits offer winter chemical kits that will work for any swimming pool. These chemical kits typically include a chlorine-free oxidizing pool shock chemical, a slow-dissolving granular algaecide and a sequestering agent that will prevent scaling and staining. These winter chemicals are necessary pool chemicals for closing a pool for the cold season. Each is packaged and labeled for easy identification and use; they come in a granular form that is easy to manage and disperse into the pool water.
The three special winterizing chemicals offer specific protection and their proper use will ensure that the swimming pool is ready when the spring rolls around. In addition, each of these three chemicals works well when used in conjunction with a Winter Pill, an example of which is pictured left (view the 30,000 Gallon Winter Pill here). A Winter Pill is included in two of the Winter Combo Pool Kits mentioned above; both the 15,000 Gallon Kit and the 30,000 Gallon Kit offer the Winter Pill.
How does the Winter Pill work? A plastic ball or "pill" floats in your pool water all winter, releasing a natural enzyme that will break down organic debris. This enzyme is released via a timed mechanism in the pill which discharges the perfect amount to protect your pool water. In addition to killing off organic material, the Winter Pill acts like a natural sequestering agent, preventing hard metals from staining, damaging and discoloring your pool liner. The enzyme is a non-toxic substance that will work with all other pool winterizing chemicals, but it does not come in all Winter Combo Kits.
While the Winter Pill is recommended by Family Leisure and it will help keep your pool water clean in the winter, it is not required to close your swimming pool. If you are looking for just the bare minimum as far as winter pool care chemicals, one of the kits without the Winter Pill will work. But if you want to go all out and do everything you can to prevent growth and debris from building in the water and decrease the amount of time and chemicals needed when you open the pool back up in the spring, a Winter Combo Kit with a Winter Pill is the combo kit for you. It will make owning your pool during the winter and opening it in the spring easier than in the past! We promise!
